According to Wikipedia, the High Holy Days or Yamim Noraim [which literally translates to "Days of Awe"], is most ambitiously defined as “the entire 40-day penitential period” in the Jewish year from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur.

It traditionally represented the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai before coming down with the second, or “replacement” set of stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written.
