Brian Hedden

A native of Upstate New York and a Brooklyn resident “on-and-off” since 1999 (he’s still in denial about his four-year exile in Connecticut), Brian founded BK Southie, a southern Brooklyn community blog, in 2009, and relaunched it as the Bay Ridge-focused Odyssey in 2012. His favorite TV show is The Big Bang Theory, which says a lot more about his personality than he would care to admit. His interests include pizza, Weissbier, and taking the subway to the beach, because only the best beaches in the world are subway-accessible.

Councilman Gentile's Office Calls For Level Playing Field Between Food Carts, Storefront Businesses

SHOPPING & COMMERCE: “Plain and simple: we need to level the playing field.” That’s what Justin Brannan, press secretary for Councilman Vincent Gentile, said to us when asked to comment on last week’s developments in the conflict between Bay Ridge’s food carts and brick-and-mortar restaurants. Councilman Gentile has often been reported as opposing food carts in the BID, and made comments on the issue at the Community Board 10 general meeting in April. We reached out to Brannan, wanting to know what specific proposals the Councilman was offering. All of this, plus a report from Community Board 10 chairperson Joanne Seminara, a statement from the attorney of halal food cart operator Sammy Kassen, and an excerpt from a 2011 Wall Street Journal article highlighting the black market for mobile food vending permits.

Brooklyn 11223 Finale: Lackluster Ratings Despite Massive Lead-In

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: Last week, the season finale of Brooklyn 11223 – the Bay Ridge / Gravesend Jersey Shore copycat series on Oxygen – aired to 715,000 viewers, its highest rating of the year. Oxygen boasted of the show’s high-water mark in a press release, but also admitted that it took a two-million-viewer lead-in – from Bad Girls Club – just to make it that far. The prior episode of Brooklyn 11223 aired to fewer than 500,000 viewers.

Bay Ridge Greenmarket returns with fresh fruits, veggies this Saturday

FOOD & DRINK: After a weekend of celebrating Mexico’s mighty 1862 victory over invading French marines at the Battle of Puebla with stiff margaritas, beefy tacos, and the biggest, most ginormous burrito I have ever seen in my life… I could totally stand to eat an apple or two. Maybe even reacquaint myself with “vegetables.” So perhaps GrowNYC had me in mind when they decided to follow up Cinco de Mayo with the reopening of the Bay Ridge Greenmarket – back for its fifth season, starting this Saturday, May 12. The market will be open from 8am to 3pm this Saturday and every Saturday until November 17.
