Brian Hedden

A native of Upstate New York and a Brooklyn resident “on-and-off” since 1999 (he’s still in denial about his four-year exile in Connecticut), Brian founded BK Southie, a southern Brooklyn community blog, in 2009, and relaunched it as the Bay Ridge-focused Odyssey in 2012. His favorite TV show is The Big Bang Theory, which says a lot more about his personality than he would care to admit. His interests include pizza, Weissbier, and taking the subway to the beach, because only the best beaches in the world are subway-accessible.

Seen On Bay Ridge Avenue: Legion & Mosque

BAY RIDGE, SEEN IN PHOTOS: Please tell me there’s a point in the week – or even in the year – when people are steaming in and out of both the American Legion and the Oulel Albab mosque. Now, THAT is a picture that would be worth a thousand words.

Brooklyn 11223: The Very True Story Of How A Bay Ridge Show Got A Gravesend Zip Code

BAY RIDGE, GRAVESEND, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: OK, first of all, docu-series? DOCU-SERIES? What the frak is that supposed to mean? If we’re to suppose that’s meant to be the amalgamation of the words “documentary” and “series,” then I would describe Ken Burn’s The Civil War is a docu-series. This looks like trash the guys at Sanitation wouldn’t pick up. And also – 11223 is not Bay Ridge.

Tough Media Week For Rep. Grimm

BAY RIDGE, POLITICS: It hasn’t been an easy week in the media for Congressman Michael Grimm, the Republican representing Bay Ridge and Staten Island in the House of Representatives. Yesterday’s news that a staffer for Representative Michael Grimm had been arrested for a physical altercation with his teenage son is the latest in a series of black marks against the Congressman and his office.

Seen At John Paul Jones Park: Ready, Aim...

BAY RIDGE, SEEN IN PHOTOS: Remember: the key to a strong harbor defense is being ready to blow your principal bridges to smithereens before letting them fall into enemy hands. John Paul Jones knew this. That is why there was no bridge between Brooklyn and Staten Island during the Revolutionary War.

Seen On 5th Avenue: Peggy O'Neill's

BAY RIDGE, SEEN IN PHOTOS: This is a bit of a sick day for me, so instead of a recent picture, you get this one from the Wayback Machine of 2007. I love that one of the reviews on Yelp described this place as a “spinoff” of the “original located in Coney Island.” OK. Sure.

Cabaret license for Amnesia nighclub faces opposition from neighbors, Community Board

BAY RIDGE, FOOD & DRINK: A cabaret license application for the Amnesia nightclub (10007 4th Avenue) is facing stiff opposition from neighbors, who spoke out against the club at a Community Board 10 sub-committee meeting Wednesday night. Citing community complaints, adverse history, and the fact that Amnesia has already been operating as a dance club without a cabaret license, the Police & Public Safety Committee voted to recommend rejecting Amnesia’s cabaret application. See community complains, the club representative’s response, and some background on NYC cabaret and dancing laws.

Seen On 79th Street: Engine 284

DYKER HEIGHTS, SEEN IN PHOTOS: I wonder if I should have taken a video of this firehouse instead of a still photo. Just try to imagine the flags barely fluttering because they’re held taut by the wind, and imagine all you can hear is wind noise.

Emergency sewer reconstruction on 76th Street

DYKER HEIGHTS, GENERAL NEWS: A short trench has been dug into 76th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues in order for the city to perform ‘emergency sewer reconstruction.’ We’ve reached out to the NYC Department of Design and Construction to determine how long the project is expected to take.
