Remember when it used to get cold in the winter? Snow? Even blizzard on us? (Also: remember when ‘blizzard’ was a verb?)

I have a vague memory of it, which fortunately can be reinforced by photographic evidence, like this photo taken last winter following one of the snow storms. The September 11 memorial beacon is visible at the end of the pier.

Remember: the key to a strong harbor defense is being ready to blow your principal bridges to smithereens before letting them fall into enemy hands. John Paul Jones knew this. That is why there was no bridge between Brooklyn and Staten Island during the Revolutionary War.

This is a bit of a sick day for me, so instead of a recent picture, you get this one from the Wayback Machine of 2007. I love that one of the reviews on Yelp described this place as a “spinoff” of the “original located in Coney Island.” OK. Sure.

This was the incarnation of Peggy’s that existed before it’s closure in 2009. Not the “real” Peggy’s. (And I’m not talking about Coney Island anymore.)

I’m in a bit of a fire house mood this week, as you’ll see later on. But why wouldn’t I, they do make for compelling photography targets. With their big, red doors, two- or three-story brick facades, and the Stars & Stripes on full display – to say nothing of the people inside, ready to run into that which the rest of us would do well to run away from – they’re one of the quintessential ties that bind a community together.

A Brooklyn-raised acquaintance who move moved to Pittsburgh once marveled at  the views of downtown’s skyscraper office buildings from the bluffs of the nearby Hill District – a “city at eye level” is what he called it. I’m often reminded of that by the views down the side streets off Third Avenue, particularly down 84th Street facing Fort Hamilton High School.
