Last week, members of Bay Ridge’s Community Board 10 recommended that the state shutter a 93rd Street watering hole they insist has turned into a den of drug dealing and violence, reports Brooklyn Daily’s William Bredderman.

The panel asked the State Liquor Authority to deny a liquor license renewal for the 93 Lounge [315 93rd St], citing complaints of noise, fights and littering from residents of 93rd Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue, who say the lounge’s shady patrons routinely disturb the peace on their street.

“There’s a memory of how this place has been run,” former Police and Public Safety Committee chairwoman Susan Pulaski told Brooklyn Daily. “They’re known for bringing in third-party promoters and illegal activity. We all know about the drug situation in there.” Continue reading »

The Space Shuttle Enterprise, seen here in its old home at the Smithsonian's Dulles Airport annex, will be making low-altitude fly-overs on its way to the Intrepid, including a pass over the Verrazano Bridge. Photo source: Wikipedia.org

The Space Shuttle Enterprise is due to make low-altitude fly-overs around New York City this morning, including a couple of passes over the Verrazano Bridge.

Flying from Dulles Airport to JFK, the Enterprise will be mated to the top of a specially-outfitted Boeing 747. The Enterprise should be overhead between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m, according to NYC.gov. NASA amazed crowds in Washington, D.C. last week when the Discovery made similar low-altitude fly-bys over landmarks such as the Capitol building. A map of the projected flight plan is available at NYC Aviation.

The Enterprise was a non-spacefaring prototype for the shuttle program. It flew in several Approach and Landing tests in 1977, but never went into space. The first spaceflight mission by a shuttle was flown by Columbia in 1981, and was followed by Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor. While the other orbiters were flying missions for NASA, Enterprise resided at the Dulles Airport annex facilities of the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, unretiring briefly following the Challenger disaster to test the shuttle’s new drag parachute braking system. When Discovery was given to the Smithsonian following the 30-year-old shuttle program’s retirement, the Enterprise was given to New York’s Interpid Sea-Air-Space Museum.

The Bay Ridge Community Council will be holding its annual family picnic on Sunday, May 6, at the Fort Hamilton army base. Held from 11am to 5pm on the bluff overlooking the Narrows, the BRCC will be hosting a wide variety of games at the picnic. Admission is $2, and be sure to bring your photo ID. (You know… army rules.) Bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks, table, chairs and/or blanket.

Check that – if you’re bringing your own table and chairs, I say you’re missing the point of a picnic. Picnics are for sitting cross-legged on the ground. (If necessary, the rain date will be Sunday, June 3.)

The Bay Ridge Community Council has also announced its new executive board members for 2012-2013. As reported by Helen Klein of the Home Reporter, Renee Dorsa, the president of the Brooklyn Real Estate Board, will be taking over as BRCC President. Alex Conti, the outgoing three-term President, will become the organization’s 1st vice president. Karen Tadross (2nd vice president), Chandra Hira (recording secretary), Joseph Sbarra (treasurer), Arlene Keating (executive secretary), and Frank Lombardi (corresponding secretary) will fill out the executive board.

Joey Lynn Tekulve, apparent antagonist in Oxygen's Brooklyn 11223. Photo: EJ Camp/Oxygen Media

1) I watched 20 minutes of an hour-long episode. I was just as uninterested as I thought I would be. I was far more captivated by the Chicago Blackhawks getting soundly beat in their playoff elimination game.

2) As you’re probably aware, Brooklyn 11223 revolves around two feuding women and their competing groups of friends. I think, as part of my emotional investment in the series, I was supposed to pick sides. And so I have: Joey Lynn stuck me as the ever-so-slightly less self-absorbed and manipulative wreck than Christine.

3) Of course, the whole concept is contrived and manufactured. It’s widely accepted that Joey Lynn and Christine are playing caricatures of themselves. Not like Jon And Kate Plus Eight – we weren’t supposed to take sides, but we did anyway when it turned out that both Jon and Kate were genuinely unlikable people.

4) As a non-viewer of reality TV, the only reason I watched any of this show was because of the Bay Ridge/Gravesend connection. And since most of the 20 minutes I watched took place at a bar in Manhattan, I can’t even comment on that. Continue reading »

This Thursday, at the Bay Ridge Library (7223 Ridge Boulevard), the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance will co-host a community meeting with Councilmember Vincent Gentile and Borough President Marty Markowitz to present and solicit ideas for the 69th Street Eco Dock.

The 69th Street Pier was selected as the location of the Eco Dock in 2009, with the help of $300,000 in funding from Gentile. The dock is expected to be constructed this summer by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance – a coalition of over 600 regional waterway-oriented organizations – is reaching out to the community to plan programs and operations at the new dock. The dock can support a wide variety of program opportunities including historic and educational vessel programming, kayaking, community events and environmental education projects. The purpose of Thursday’s meeting is to begin working on possible programs at the dock with the Bay Ridge community.

The design of the dock is the result of a two-year-long process which incorporated feedback from the hand-powered boating community and large vessel operators.

The meeting will run this Thursday, April 26, from 6pm to 8pm. Those interested in attending should contact Becky Schneider at bschneider@waterfrontalliance.org to RSVP.

16 have been chosen. One will win.

It’s the most ambitious project to decide, once and for all, who has the best pizza in Bay Ridge.

The Bay Ridge Odyssey is conducting the 2012 Bay Ridge Pizzeria Bracket Challenge, where we have selected and seeded 16 neighborhood pizzerias, and will pair them off against one another, tournament-style. For each pairing, our team of judges will have a slice from each, and answer the simple question: which one is better?

The first round will showcase the bread-and-butter of any pizzeria: the plain slice. Eight will advance with the opportunity for greatness. The other eight will stay home… and continue to make great pizza, because let’s face it. There’s no such thing as a bad slice around here.

Attention, readers: there are still opportunities to become judges in the 2012 Bay Ridge Pizzeria Bracket Challenge. If you’re interested, let us know as soon as possible by e-mail (info@bayridgeodyssey.com). The cost of the pizza will be covered by the Bay Ridge Odyssey.
