[UPDATED] 2:08 p.m. Based on a tweet we received from the author of the original news report, the victim has been deemed unlikely to survive.

In what’s beginning to feel like a case of déjà vu, the combination of speeding and reckless driving has once again caused serious injury to a pedestrian on the streets of Bay Ridge.

A 34-year-old woman was struck by a speeding motorist at the corner of 86th Street and Third Avenue on March 13, writes Will Bredderman for Brooklyn Paper.

The car collided with the woman as she made her way across 86th Street at approximately 7:30 p.m. One witness described hearing a screech followed by a thud in the moments leading up to the gruesome and bloody scene. Continue reading »

Fun Fact: Erin go bragh is the Anglicization of an Irish Gaelic phrase which means, “saving the best parade for last.”

Oh, some people think they want to go to a parade that’s on March 17, actual St. Patrick’s Day. Well, kids, it’s 2013 – the best college bowl games aren’t on January 1st anymore, either, they’re played the week after New Year’s. Just like the best St. Patrick’s Day parade is a week after St. Patrick’s Day. Click here for more about the parade

It looks like burglars are still finding plenty of homes to score jewelry, cash and electronics from in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

While none of the incidents reported by Will Bredderman in yesterday’s Brooklyn Paper police blotter occurred on 70th Street, they all happened within blocks of previously pilfered apartments:

  • The occupant of a ground floor apartment on 73rd Street between 13th Avenue and 14th Avenue left at around 2 p.m. on February 11. She returned at 5:15 p.m. to find her glass sliding door shattered and a host of expensive items – including three gold rings, one onyx ring, a diamond bracelet, a diamond necklace, an elk ivory watch, a pair of elk ivory cufflinks, $5,000 in bills, and a Nikon camera gone.

  • The next day another victim, who had left her 76th Street flat at around 5:30 p.m., had trouble gaining entry after returning four hours later. Realizing the entrance was blocked with the door to an adjacent closet, she pushed her way into the apartment – which is located between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue. Seeing the place had been ransacked, she also noticed the shade on her fire escape window drawn open. Stolen items reported to police included two iPads, a checkbook, a gold chain, two gold necklaces, two gold watches, two gold bracelets, a silver necklace, a pair of gold earrings, and two gold pendants.

  • During that same day, a resident of Ridge Blvd between 75th Street and 76th Street was burglarized by some apparently numismatic crooks. He left for the day at 7 a.m. and came back at 11:30 p.m. to discover his MacBook, tablet computer, Canon camera, watch, and $400 in Chinese currency missing.

Veteran journalist and author Pete Hamill once said, “never go into a bar that needs a bouncer.” The following story just might prove the wisdom of that statement:

In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 3, a bouncer at Nouveau Restaurant [8214 3rd Ave] was reportedly stabbed in the buttocks by a violent patron, writes CNG’s Will Bredderman. Continue reading »

In the midst of a bloody civil war, protesters in Idlib use humor against Bashar al-Assad (Image source: FreedomHouse2 via Flickr).

As a brutal civil war continues in Syria between the rebel groups of the Free Syrian Army and forces loyal to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, website Latitude News shows how one Bay Ridge hair salon owner is using social media sites such as Facebook, as well as an interactive smart phone app, to keep tabs on loved ones back in his native country.

Reporter Justin Mitchell introduces us to 25-year-old Shadi Batal, who has been running a successful hair salon on 3rd Avenue for 5 years. While Batal is in many ways living the American dream, the true indicators of his happiness are much more complex than material accomplishments in his adopted home.

As someone who was born – and still has family – in Idlib, the northwestern stronghold of the FSA in Syria, he knows all to well what it’s like to mourn relatives killed in a conflict taking place halfway across the world from the safety of Brooklyn. Continue reading »

It can be easy to forget a friend’s birthday, especially when it falls smack in the middle of a hectic holiday season – which is why we’re wishing a belated happy birthday to our much-beloved hood of Bay Ridge!

According to Home Reporter, this past Sunday, December 16, was the 159th anniversary of the day in 1853 when prominent residents of Yellow Hook voted to change the area’s name to Bay Ridge.

The name change was prompted by an outbreak of yellow fever. Not wanting their beautiful bay side hamlet to be associated with the illness, community leaders made the real estate-savvy decision to name the area after the terminal moraine, or ridge, it sits on top of. Continue reading »

Frank and Eddie’s Meat Market [7502 3rd Ave] may soon begin serving up adult beverages alongside their choice steaks and cold cuts, as reported by Will Bredderman for Brooklyn Paper.

Dennis Mannarino who owns the butcher shop, which has provided the neighborhood with prime meats since 1963, wants to turn a former food prep area in the back of the store into a beer and wine bar that will sell hot deli sandwiches.

Mannarino, along with butcher bar partners Pam Caliendo and Joe Tafuri, has apparently already gotten the ball rolling by applying for a liquor license, readying the space for construction, and beginning to assemble a menu. Continue reading »

A co-named street sign in East Harlem carries the torch of generations past (Image source: cuttlefish via Flickr).

One bright autumn day at the age of around nine or ten years old, I was walking down Avenue T on my way towards Marine Park when I spotted a group of barrel chested older men with graying hair standing in the middle of Coyle Street.

They were playing a game that at the time I barely recognized – stickball. It was a term I had certainly heard of, and vaguely knew about but never experienced first hand. After asking a few people, I was told that it was old-timers day or something to that effect. While never a big sports fan, I was still fascinated with this mysterious game – one that had fallen out of favor in the decade or so before my birth.
