NEWS: After neighbors complained to city officials about drug-dealing and occasional violent crime – including a recent shooting – on Bay Ridge’s Fifth Avenue, a plan to place police security cameras on the commercial stretch recently came one step closer to fruition.

2013 Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Parade Is Sunday, March 24

EVENTS: Erin go bragh is the anglicisation of an Irish Gaelic phrase which means, “saving the best parade for last.” Oh, you think you want to go to a parade that’s on March 17, actual St. Patrick’s Day. Well, kids, it’s 2013 – the best college bowl games aren’t on January 1st anymore, either, they’re played the week after New Year’s. Just like the best St. Patrick’s Day parade is a week after St. Patrick’s Day. On Sunday 3/24, the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade will march down 3rd Avenue.

Die Hard Diner: Hinsch's Gets New Owner

FOOD & DRINK: Thanks to a deal partners Roger Desmond, Gerard Bell and Bill Gardell recently made with Staten Island diner mogul Mike Moudatsos, the endangered eatery, which first opened in 1915 as Reichert’s ice cream parlor and still makes its own ice cream, will reportedly live on as “Mike’s Hinsch’s.”

FOOD & DRINK: According to Brooklyn Paper’s Will Bredderman, neighborhood institution Hinsch’s, which was expected to close March 1, has dodged the figurative bullet and will in fact remain on 5th Avenue for the foreseeable future, with owner Roger Desmond re-tooling the place for the nighttime date crowd.
