The above video, uploaded onto Youtube by Victor Miranda, pans, zooms, and fades it way into our hearts with some beautiful scenes from Bay Ridge’s Shore Road area – including shots of the 69th Street Pier, ships navigating Upper New York Bay in the foreground of the Manhattan skyline, a group of frolicking squirrels in Owl’s Head Park, and the Shore Parkway Promenade.

Still stuck at home and bored? Or maybe you’ve made it in to work and decided to take your mind off commuter hell for a few moments?

Here are a couple examples of footage taken on Monday while superstorm Sandy was still raging over our area.

One video shows the 69th Street pier during what looks like the height of the so-called frankenstorm.

In another, World News Australia conducts a phone interview with stranded-at-home high school math teacher Ellie Terry – who works at Telecommunications High School [350 67th Street], while scenes captured during Sandy’s wrath play on screen.

Terry’s plans while schools are still being used as evacuation centers? Using a special Facebook plug-in, she’s opted to take a couple of days to phone undecided voters in Pennsylvania for President Obama’s reelection campaign.

Terrestrial forms of transportation have always proved a challenge in New York City. After all, a densely populated metropolis occupying several islands – in addition to the mainland United States, has often called for bridges, tunnels, and trams where other settlements could build simple overland roads.

However, as our aging transportation infrastructure struggles to keep up with population growth, New York – and Brooklyn’s – legacy as home to one of the world’s largest natural harbors, could prove a help rather than a hindrance in the quest for a more efficient and diversified mass transit system.

A bipartisan group of local elected officials, including Democrats such as State Senator Diane Savino, State Assemblymen Alec Brook-Krasny and Steve Cymbowitz, City Councilman Vincent Gentile, as well as Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, are calling for the very popular East River Ferry service to be expanded to Southern Brooklyn, as reported by Paula Katinas in a *moving* article for the Brooklyn Eagle. On Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at around 8:30 a.m., the Parade of Ships will enter New York Harbor and proceed to the piers on the West Side of Manhattan, heralding the start of New York’s Fleet Week – as it has since 1984.

If you didn’t already know, the famous flotilla passes right under the Verrazano. Which means you won’t have to schlep all the way to Manhattan to get your fill of the tall sailing vessels of old, as well as WWII-era destroyers. I misspoke after first being introduced to the work of talented Bath Beach photographer David Tan. I mistakenly thought that David only used film cameras.

While David shoots “almost exclusively in film now,” he does maintain “quite a stock of digital work” on his site.

When I look at a breathtaking digital shot like the one above, which shows the same cool muted colors he’s known for on film, I’m certain that it’s more a testament to David’s talents as a shutterbug than to the type of equipment he uses.

The image featured above was shot on August 6, 2010 with a Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XS.

For more of David’s excellent photos, as well as a chance to search by both the camera and lens type he used on each pic, please visit his blog at dtan.blogspot.com.
