The 22nd State Senate district.

The 22nd State Senate district.

Is the so-called “Golden effect” waning in Southwest Brooklyn?

New York City political blog Room Eight recently published an analysis of November’s election results that show victorious Republican State Senator Marty Golden actually lost the two constituencies of the 22nd Senate District that fall entirely within Bay Ridge’s borders. Continue reading »

Today is election day!

There have been a few changes to Congressional, State Senate, and State Assembly districts since the last election. This article reviews the new boundaries for State Senate districts that cover Bay Ridge, and lists the candidates that have their names on the ballot (* indicates incumbent candidate). Remember, you can locate your polling site through the Board of Elections web site, or text NYCVOTES to 877877.

State Senate – District 22

The Bay Ridge portion of the 22nd State Senate district, which stretches to Mill Basin.

Most of Bay Ridge is represented by the 22nd State Senate district. It covers much of the same ground as it did before, though there are some minor changes in the northeast corner of Bay Ridge (a few residents once represented in the 22nd district are now in the 23rd district). There are changes to the boundary in the eastern part of the district, as it now includes Manhattan Beach. The candidates on the ballot are:

If you haven’t had your fill of the political drama that was the presidential debates, and you enjoyed watching this, then you really need to tune to NY 1 tonight at 7:00 p.m. for another look at both candidates in the race to represent the 22nd State Senate District!

Incidentally, Gounardes will be hosting a debate-watching party in the back room of Cebu Bar & Bistro [8801 3rd Ave], beginning at 6:45 p.m.

At a recent candidate forum, State Senate hopeful Andrew Gounardes pointed out some contradictory statements made by his opponent Marty Golden about the New York Police Department’s mosque surveillance program.

At the forum, which was hosted by the Arab American Association of New York, State Senator Marty Golden claimed to be against the NYPD Demographics Unit’s controversial infiltration of Muslim groups – An initiative that has once again come under criticism after a former NYPD informant told the Associated Press that he was paid to “create and capture” terrorist suspects by “baiting” fellow Muslims to discuss waging attacks. Beginning yesterday, L Magazine published a two-part interview with State Senatorial hopeful and Bay Ridge native Andrew Gounardes by reporter Henry Stewart.

In an extensive discussion over lunch at the Pegasus Diner, Stewart managed to touch on a host of issues with his questions for Gounardes – who for the most part gave complete and, at times, compelling answers.

Some of the topics covered included funding for public services such as education and mass transit [including a personal anecdote by Gounardes about waiting for the R Train], the Fair Pay Act – the passage of which the candidate named as his first priority upon being elected; as well as lingering stereotypes about a district that has undergone drastic political and demographic changes in recent years, all while remaining a relatively safe and stable place.

In short, they pretty much covered everything – from driving around visiting politicos for Senator Bob Menendez earlier in his career, to the meat and potatoes of today’s public policy, and since it’s L Magazine, hipster bars.

The first half of the interview concentrates more on general policy, debating incumbent Marty Golden, and Gounardes’ reasons for running. The second part focuses more on “hot-button” issues such as bike lanes, Brooklyn 11223, hipsters, and food cart wars. Both make for an entertaining and informative read.

Andrew Gounardes (left) and Marty Golden (right) are expected to debate each other for the second time in three nights, this time at the Brooklyn Candidates Night hosted by the Arab American Association of New York. (Photos: Andrew Gounardes/Flickr and Erica Sherman)

With the postponement-turned-cancellation of The Great Bay Ridge Debate, there’s been a bit of a hole left in the debate scene for local candidates. The Dyker Heights Civic Association filled the void somewhat with their debate this past Tuesday night, which saw a fiery debate between State Senator Marty Golden and his Democratic challenger, Andrew Gounardes.

If you’re looking for something right in Bay Ridge, you can go to PS 170 (7109 6th Avenue) tonight at 6:30pm for the 2012 Brooklyn Candidates’ Night. Hosted by the Arab American Association of New York, the forum invited local candidates for Congress, State Senate, and State Assembly.

Like all very lazy citizen-journalists, I tweeted AAANY Executive Director Linda Sarsour to see who has confirmed. For starters, it looks like Golden and Gounardes will face each other once again – second time in three nights! Continue reading »

Last night, State Senator Marty Golden and his Democratic opponent, Andrew Gounardes, faced each other in a fiery debate hosted by the Dyker Heights Civic Association.

The debate serves as a bit of a stand-in for the Great Bay Ridge Debate, which was postponed and ultimately cancelled by the Bay Ridge Community Council. Golden-vs-Gounardes became the headline event in a night that also included Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, his Republican challenger Tom McCarthy, Congressman Michael Grimm, and Assemblyman Peter Abatte. Bay Ridge Odyssey has confirmed with Andrew Gounardes’ campaign that the State senate hopeful will be debating incumbent Marty Golden this evening in Dyker Heights.

Tonight’s debate, which is sponsored by the Dyker Heights Community Council, will take place at Saint Phillip’s Episcopal Church [1072 80th Street] at 8 p.m.

A previously planned debate in Bay Ridge between the two, as well as candidates from three other local races, has yet to be rescheduled after a scheduling conflict with the start of Jewish holiday Yom Kipur led to its cancellation.
