The Last Night of Ballyhoo is a romantic comedy drama by Alfred Uhry, the author of Driving Miss Daisy. Set in 1939, Gone with the Wind is in town for the premiere and Hitler is invading Poland, but the Freitag family of Atlanta is more concerned about the sensational social event, Ballyhoo.

This edition is a Ridge Repertory Company production.

Showtimes are on Saturday, December 1 at 8pm, and Sunday, December 2 at 5pm. Tickets are $15. To reserve tickets, call 718-836-3103 or e-mail ridgerepertory@gmail.com.

The Bay Ridge Jewish Center is at 405 81st Street.

According to Wikipedia, the High Holy Days or Yamim Noraim [which literally translates to "Days of Awe"], is most ambitiously defined as “the entire 40-day penitential period” in the Jewish year from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur.

It traditionally represented the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai before coming down with the second, or “replacement” set of stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written.

The High Holy Days schedule for the Bay Ridge Jewish Center [405 81st Street] is available in its entirety after the jump: Continue reading »

Coincidence? (Image source: robertandamanda via Flickr).

The following announcement was taken word for word from the Bay Ridge Jewish Center’s website:

June 26: Bible and Beer

Do you like your vodka with a splash of Judaism? Are you in your 20s or 30s? Join Bay Ridge Jewish Center for Torah on Tap! The first round of beer is on us…. Tuesday, June 26 at 8pm, at the Schnitzel Haus. 7319 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11209.

Could the center’s choice of venue be a thinly veiled reference to a certain 2006 movie by comedy troupe Broken Lizard? Looks like you’ll have to attend in order to find out…

This is more than an excuse to geek out on Doctor Who - I love a good story about communicating with someone in the same place but different time via magic mirror. (BBC Cymru Wales)

Tomorrow night (April 15), at 6pm, the Ridge Repertory Company will bring a new musical called “Mirror, Mirror… A Musical In Seven Times” to the Bay Ridge Jewish Center. Susan Bucci, one of the writers, says this about “Mirror, Mirror:”

This play is about the tenants living a Manhattan brownstone over a period from roughly 1870 to 2011.  The story covers these people and what happens to them at various points in their lives and how they interact with one another across time through the use of a magic mirror.  While the play does have a certain fantasy element to it,it is really more of a musical drama with 21 original songs.

Director James Martinelli adds, “Being touched and and cared for doesn’t only happen with people of the present, it happens from people of the past.”

If you aren’t able to make tomorrow’s showing, “Mirror, Mirror” will run again next Sunday, April 22. Admission is $10, and includes coffee. The play should run about two hours, plus intermission.

The Bay Ridge Jewish Center is located at 405 81st Street.

Next week, the Bay Ridge Jewish Center (405 81st Street) will be celebrating Purim, and will also have the annual Shabbat Across America.

  • On Wednesday, March 7, the BRJC will have its Purim celebration. The event will consist of a reading of the Megillah (the Book of Esther, which tells the story of the Queen of Persia whom saves the Jewish people from Haman), a costume parade, and a Purim play. And Hamantashen cookies. Sweet, delicious, Hamantashen cookies. The reading begins at 6pm. (The Megillah is read again at 9am Thursday morning.) [UPDATE 12:30pm] I also want to highlight that the BRJC is accepting canned goods as part of its Purim food drive. Since charity is an inseparable part of Purim, it would be remiss of me to leave that out.
  • The BRJC will take part in Shabbat Across America on Friday, March 9. Shabbat Across America is an annual event organized by the National Jewish Outreach Program, held in synagogues across the country to give a “taste” of the traditions, prayers, and songs of Shabbat. All ages are invited. Services begin at 6pm, and will be followed by a pot luck dinner – bring a homemade dairy dish for ten people (no peanuts). The BRJC also has a Tot Shabbat program that day at 5pm for families with children 4 and under ($5 per family).
