After “political newcomer” Tom McCarthy’s resounding 70 percent victory over local district leader Lucretia Regina-Potter for the 46th Assembly District’s Republican primary, some of you might be asking yourselves, “Who is Tom McCarthy?” Continue reading »

In the Youtube video shown above, which was apparently taken in May of 2010, thieves make quick work of a complete set of car wheels on 73rd Street.

More recently, two different Bay Ridge drivers returned to their parked cars only to find them sans wheels during the last week of July – as car rim and tire thefts continue to pose a major headache for car owners in Southwestern Brooklyn and beyond.

According to Brooklyn Daily’s Will Bredderman, who writes about both incidents in this week’s police blotter, one crime occurred on Shore Road sometime on or before July 26, with a second happening on Bay Ridge Parkway on July 26. Continue reading »

A huge sinkhole that opened up yesterday on 79th Street between 5th Avenue and 4th Avenue is being blamed on the failure of a 50 inch sewer pipe that dates back to 1900.

The large cavity nearly enveloped a car as it opened up a 20-foot section of asphalt, according to CBS 2.

1010 Wins reporter Joe Montone spoke with Annette Flood, who says she parked her car near the site of the sinkhole shortly before the ground gave way. Continue reading »

Salumerias were once as ubiquitous to Southern Brooklyn as double parked cars. But over the years, tastes changed, new groups moved in, and the younger generation increasingly bought their cold cuts from a supermarket instead of the old fashioned pork store.

Remember that scene from Pope of Greenwich Village where Eric Roberts’ character visits three different specialty stores to buy fixings for a hero sandwich? Yeah, not really happening anymore. When was the last time you even heard of someone under 40 making a special trip to a formaggeria for cheese?

However, in this “what’s old is new again” age of cooking that puts such a heavy emphasis on buzz words like local, artisanal, traditional, authentic, and slow food, it can be comforting to hear when a student of the old pros brings family traditions – as well as some new concepts – to the table.

According to Brooklyn Daily’s Sarah Zorn, combining new innovations with old favorites seem to be the idea behind A.L. Coluccio. This “first-time solo venture” is by Louis Coluccio of Bensonhurst’s famed D. Coluccio and Sons Importers – who will attempt to meld the traditional Italian-American salumeria and grocery store with a modern cafe on Bay Ridge’s 3rd Avenue this August. Continue reading »

In the saga of the 5th Avenue food cart wars, perspective can be everything. A recent Daily News piece, which reported on the recent immersion of public officials into the matter, took a decidedly different approach than the News Corp-owned CNG publications Brooklyn Daily and Brooklyn Paper – an angle best illustrated by… illustrations. Yesterday, BrooklynDaily.com (the online outlet for the Bay Ridge Courier, Bay News, and other assorted papers in News Corporation’s Community Newspaper Group) reported on the rescue of Coney Island Bialys and Bagels by two Muslim-American businessmen. Here’s the link to their story, though you should probably read the story at The Jewish Daily Forward, too, since they broke the news over a week ago.

That the Community Newspaper Group is a week late to a story doesn’t shock me, of course. What did shock me was the Daily’s list of “similar stories” to what was otherwise a feel-good story about people reaching across ethnic lines to bake sweet, delicious bread:

Not that this is anything other than News Corp doing what they do best- conflating any positive news about Muslims and Arabs in our community with terrorism and dictators – but their idea of stories similar to “Muslim-American businessmen to rescue Jewish bakery” are a story about a local terrorist moneyman and three of Shavana Abruzzo’s “Muslims who suck” editorials. Yes, the similarities to bakery ownership are striking. I can totally see it. Can’t you?

No? Maybe that’s because the stories aren’t similar at all, and the effort to make the connection is blatantly racist.
