A car struck yet another person in Bay Ridge on April 1, this time near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and 86th Street – two thoroughfares that have recently proved treacherous for pedestrians – as elected officials and the general public debate over which measures will best mitigate danger and improve safety on our streets. If proponents of a Verrazano bike-ped path have their way, the Five Boro Bike Tour and NYC Marathon will no longer be the only times people can cross the Narrows w/out the use of a motor vehicle (Image source: mlcastle via Flickr).

Six months after Transportation Alternatives proposed bike and pedestrian lanes on the Verrazano Bridge as part of their Harbor Ring project, supporters of the idea have begun a petition on website Change.org in order to help gain some much-needed traction, as well as the attention of Governor Andrew Cuomo.

While some officials have expressed doubt concerning the plan’s feasibility and cost, proponents note that the proposal is hardly a new one, and in fact goes all the way back to the bridge’s blueprint stage. Continue reading »

The chairperson of Bay Ridge’s Community Board 10 spoke out about the insidious practice of sex slavery at a recent meeting – and called on board members to report evidence of sex trafficking to police, notes Paula Katinas for Brooklyn Eagle.

“I suggest that it is time that we open our eyes and take action to protect powerless victims and bring its perpetrators to the justice they deserve,” CB 10 chair Joanne Seminara, who is also a lawyer, told those in attendance at the January 28, General Board Meeting. “Human trafficking is shamefully common… Many of whose victims are young teenagers desperate for our awareness and protection. The extraordinary courage of a few victims of this enslavement is making it possible to prosecute these crimes against humanity.” Continue reading »

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials are putting the kibosh on an ambitious plan to make the Verrazano Bridge more bike and pedestrian-friendly, as reported by Paula Katinas for the Brooklyn Eagle.

The idea for a bike-pedestrian path as an appendix to the construction of a new HOV lane was first introduced by members of Community Board 10 at a Traffic and Transportation Committee meeting.

Unfortunately for visionaries such as Environmental Committee chair Bob Hudock, and Transportation Committee chair Brian Kieren, the MTA, which operates the Verrazano, is refusing to consider the possibility. Continue reading »

Tuesday, Transportation Alternatives unveiled a project that would allow one to bike in an uninterrupted loop from the West Side of Manhattan, through the New Jersey waterfront, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, and finally return to Manhattan via either the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridges.

Called the Harbor Ring, the 50-mile route would integrate “more than 28 miles of existing shared use paths and bikeways, including significant portions of the Brooklyn Greenway, a regional section of the East Coast Greenway, the pathway over the Bayonne Bridge, the Hudson River Walkway, Hudson River Greenway, and the East River Esplanade” with 20 miles of street bike lanes.

However, there is one “missing link” of the interstate bike trail not currently in place. Continue reading »

A new Latin American-Asian fusion restaurant is set to open its doors to patrons of the culinary arts tonight in Bay Ridge.

Noveau [8214 3rd Ave], whose interior is purportedly meant to conjure up images of a Los Angeles meets Miami locale, will include menu items such as “Ahi Tuna Tartare, Pork Dumplings, Plantain-Crusted Chilean Sea Bass, Lobster Ravioli, and Filet Mignon.”

The eatery seems to place big emphasis on its decor, which was designed by Nina Ferrer, from HGTV’s Design Star and Style Network’s Clean House NY. Some elements its Brooklyn-born owner boasted about in a press release include “large photorealist paintings” by artist Patrick McGregor, as well as re-purposed light fixtures.

The address previously belonged to Ibiza, a Mediterranean restaurant and nightclub which had some liquor license problems with CB 10.

Anyone planning on going tonight?

Members of Community Board 10 know that more bike lanes are coming to Bay Ridge. But while they’ve warmed to the notion of a bike-friendly future, they’re still unhappy with the locations the DOT has chosen for the “hundreds of miles” of bike lanes it plans to add to Brooklyn neighborhoods over the next few years.
