The call went out yesterday on Occupy Sandy’s website that the relief group’s Bay Ridge Kitchen is running low on both food and supplies.

Fortunately for hurricane victims who rely on the 2000+ meals prepared daily at St. Johns Episcopal Church [461 99th Street], donating has never been easier.

As of yesterday, “orders of fresh, organic, natural, and locally produced food items can be made through FreshDirect.com and shipped directly” to St. Johns!

Ship to:

St. John’s Episcopal Church
461 99th Street
Brooklyn, NY 11209

Are you strapped for time and not sure what food items to purchase? No Problem! Donors can also buy a gift card online and simply email it to SandyBayRidge@Interoccupy.net.

Occupy FEMA? Chepe of Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Sandy “training” FEMA workers on Staten Island (Image source: Facebook.com).

More than a year after Occupy Wall Street first made international headlines by taking over Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, the activist group has reinvented itself as an effective disaster relief organization.

In an online article for news magazine the Nation, reporter Ayasha Guerin documents the relief work Occupy Sandy has been undertaking in the storm-ravaged Rockaways. Unbeknownst to many, a Sunset Park church within walking distance of Bay Ridge is serving as a crucial link in the Occupy supply chain. Continue reading »

Last Sunday, eleven years to the day after American boots first hit the ground in Afghanistan, an AWOL soldier who claims he was deployed a total of three times in Afghanistan, and once in Iraq, attempted to surrender to military authorities at Fort Hamilton, as reported by Elizabeth Flock for U.S News & World Report.

In an account on the blog Unoccupier, a person identifying himself as Sgt. Micah Turner writes that he turned himself in at the Southwest Brooklyn Army installation not once but twice, which a pro bono attorney says may buy him an additional 30 days of freedom. Continue reading »

On the same day that Occupy Wall Street protestors stage a May Day general strike, the Bay Ridge Democrats, Brooklyn Chapter of the Working Families Party, Citizens Action NY, Common Cause, and MoveOn Brooklyn will meet at Longbow Pub & Pantry to kick-off a month-long push for “Fair Elections” – public financing of campaigns, lower campaign contribution limits and an end to pay-to-play politics – in New York State.

The Bay Ridge Democrats want to push the state government to adopt a similar public campaign finance system as the city – a candidate gets $6 in public money for every $1 raised, up to $175 per donor – to encourage more candidates, more small donors and more public interest in elections. In a press release, the Bay Ridge Democrats stated 37% of the contributions to participating city candidates are for $250 or less – whereas only 5% of state donors give less than $250.

“Now is the time to take our democracy back,” said Justin Brannan, President of the Bay Ridge Democrats. “The current system is just not working. We need to ensure that the voice of all New Yorkers is heard – not just the voices of the rich or the well-connected.  It’s time to give the power back to the people and put our priorities first.”

The meeting starts at 7:30pm. Longbow Pub & Pantry is located at 7316 3rd Avenue.
