The above video, uploaded onto Youtube by Victor Miranda, pans, zooms, and fades it way into our hearts with some beautiful scenes from Bay Ridge’s Shore Road area – including shots of the 69th Street Pier, ships navigating Upper New York Bay in the foreground of the Manhattan skyline, a group of frolicking squirrels in Owl’s Head Park, and the Shore Parkway Promenade.

It can be easy to forget a friend’s birthday, especially when it falls smack in the middle of a hectic holiday season – which is why we’re wishing a belated happy birthday to our much-beloved hood of Bay Ridge!

According to Home Reporter, this past Sunday, December 16, was the 159th anniversary of the day in 1853 when prominent residents of Yellow Hook voted to change the area’s name to Bay Ridge.

The name change was prompted by an outbreak of yellow fever. Not wanting their beautiful bay side hamlet to be associated with the illness, community leaders made the real estate-savvy decision to name the area after the terminal moraine, or ridge, it sits on top of. Continue reading »

The Shore Road Parks Conservancy has announced two Christmas tree lightings approaching in the next seven days.

The first is tomorrow night (Wednesday, November 28) at the gazebo by 90th Street and Shore Road. Joining the celebration will be the Xaverian High School glee club and band, the Guild For Exceptional Children chorus, and community musician Mary Carmosino. The lighting is at 7:30pm, and light refreshments will be on hand. The rain date is November 29.

If you can’t make it tomorrow – or your Christmas spirit knows no bounds – then make your way up to Owl’s Head Park on Monday, December 3, where the Conservancy will be lighting the tree by 68th Street and Colonial Road. The GEC chorus will make an appearance at this tree lighting as well. The event runs from 7:30pm-9:30pm. The rain date is December 4.

Santa Claus is expected to attend both events.

Halloween is on, but there are options. There are still downed trees and wires in the area – use good judgement. (Photo: Toby Ord via Wikipedia)

First of all, I’m quite thankful that I live in an area where the matter to go trick-or-treating can actually be debated. I don’t think any of us have to look very far to find a friend in a much worse situation.

In postponing tonight’s annual parade in the East Village, yesterday Mayor Bloomberg urged good judgement and awareness when trick-or-treating. As reported by Politicker’s Matt Chaban:

“As you know, tomorrow is Halloween,” the mayor said. “Most streets in the city should be safe tomorrow, but some may not be, so we encourage children and adults to enjoy Halloween, but use good judgment and be careful, particularly in those areas where there aren’t any lights. Hold onto your children’s hands, because cars might not see them.”

State Senator Marty Golden reposted some words of caution from Con Edison – we have reposted them below.

If you feel uncomfortable taking your children out trick-or-treating tonight, there are a couple of options:

For trick-or-treaters, some words from Con Edison: Continue reading »

In this week’s photo, which once again comes courtesy of photographer David Tan, an owl statue watches over Owl’s Head Park, while seeming to seek out a different pickup basketball game to play in.

It was taken October 13, 2012.

Please take note: due to Hurricane Sandy, this event has been rescheduled for Saturday, November 3. The original article appears below.

Last Friday State Senator Marty Golden announced plans for this year’s Halloween Walk on his senate website.

According to his office, the event – which is now in its 17th year – will take place on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Owl’s Head Park [67th Street and Colonial Road]. Continue reading »

This story was originally published on August 21.

A musical ensemble led by saxophonist and composer Alex Violette – whom Harlem World Magazine calls a rising star, brings the sweet sounds of jazz to Owl’s Head Park on Saturday, September 8, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

The event, known as Jazz In The Park, will include free activities for children and is a great way to introduce the whole family to a new aesthetic experience.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets, light snacks, and soft drinks. Grilling and alcoholic beverages are unfortunately a no-no.

In a written statement, Councilman Vincent Gentile said, “Now with newly paved pathways, benches, fencing and landscaping – the Owl’s Head Park Overlook is the destination spot for families to enjoy beautiful weather, scenery and cultural performances sponsored by the Bay Ridge Arts + Culture Alliance… I hope everyone will help me kick-off this season with a little jazz in the park!”

Just another reminder that you can find something for everyone on the Bay Ridge Odyssey Events Calender.

Owl’s Head Park is located at 68th Street and Shore Road.

According to Steve from Bay Ridge Barks, planned improvements to the Owl’s Head Park dog run announced last year by Councilman Gentile and written about more recently by Home Reporter’s Denise Romano – while making things more pleasant for dog owners and walkers in the long run – will unfortunately close the canine-friendly space during the “peak dog time” of spring and summer 2013.

The $850,000 renovation project earmarks $200,000 for new creature comforts that include gravel, benches, fences, and water fountains. Continue reading »
