The 22nd State Senate district.

The 22nd State Senate district.

Is the so-called “Golden effect” waning in Southwest Brooklyn?

New York City political blog Room Eight recently published an analysis of November’s election results that show victorious Republican State Senator Marty Golden actually lost the two constituencies of the 22nd Senate District that fall entirely within Bay Ridge’s borders. Continue reading »

In a surprise move during what the ever-informative Colin Campbell is describing as “a particularly wild week in Albany,” five members of the State Senate’s breakaway “Independent Democratic Conference” have decided to join Republicans in a “historic bipartisan partnership.”

The announcement reportedly led to protest by mainline Senate Democrats, who pointed to their party’s technical majority in the senate as more reflective of the “desire” of voters statewide – whom they insist “voted for Democratic control of the Senate and a progressive state government.” Continue reading »

While walking around Bay Ridge, I’ve witnessed some interesting combinations of political posters in store windows and in front of private homes.

I’ve seen signs for Marty Golden and Andrew Gounardes sharing space in a car service, Gounardes and Malliotakis posters hanging out together in the front windows of Greek-owned businesses, anti-fracking signs and peace symbols glued to front doors bearing Obama bumper stickers sitting next to homes owned by die-hard Grimm fans. However, I can’t recall seeing ANY evidence of the Mark Murphy campaign’s presence in Bay Ridge. No literature, no stickers, no buttons. Zilch. Nada.

While coverage of incumbent Congressman Michael Grimm by the New York Times has often involved attempts at political pile-on involving truth that can, at times, appear stretched, the Gray Lady seems to have finally published a story about the race for New York’s 13th Congressional seat that’s grounded in reality rather than some muckraker’s wet dream. Celebrated former mayor, kingmaker, and grumpy old man Ed Koch tossed his two cents into the District 11 Congressional race late last week, and no – it wasn’t to Eastwood a chair.

While Koch backed Republican Bob Turner in last year’s special election to replace Anthony Weiner in District 9, this time he’s throwing in his lot with fellow Democrat Mark Murphy.

The reason he’s backing Murphy over incumbent Michael Grimm?

Hizzoner says the policies of Grimm, along with Congressional colleague and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan, are “hostile” to long-standing social programs that benefit the middle class. Continue reading »

After “political newcomer” Tom McCarthy’s resounding 70 percent victory over local district leader Lucretia Regina-Potter for the 46th Assembly District’s Republican primary, some of you might be asking yourselves, “Who is Tom McCarthy?” Continue reading »

[2nd UPDATE: This event will be rescheduled to avoid conflicting with the start of Yom Kippur. It will NOT be on September 25. New date TBD.]

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s get ready to ruuuuuumble participate in our electoral process!

On Tuesday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. the Great Bay Ridge Debate will pit four pairs of major party candidates for public office against one another. It’s incumbent versus challenger as the hallowed halls of Xaverian High School play host to a colossal contest of policy – in order to help you decide who to cast your vote for this November.

The four debates currently on the bill for that evening include:

Michael Grimm (R-C) vs. Mark Murphy (D) – Who will represent New York’s new 11th District in the U.S. House of Representatives? You decide.

Marty Golden (R-C) vs. Andrew Gounardes (D) – In the race for the New York State Senate’s 22nd District, find out where both candidates stand on the issues that matter to you.

Nicole Malliotakis (R-C) vs. John Mancuso (D) – How will the campaign for New York State Assembly new District 64 pan out? See both candidates first hand to find out.

In the final debate, State Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny (D) will take on the winner of a September 13, primary contest between Tom McCarthy (R-C) and Lucretia Regina-Potter (R).

Xaverian High School’s Auditorium is located at 71st Street and Shore Road.

This event is sponsored by the Bay Ridge Community Council as a public service for the citizens of Bay Ridge and beyond.

In a struggle that threatens to hyphenate us all, Republican District Leader Lucretia Regina-Potter is set to take on Democrat Alec Brook-Krasny for his New York State Assembly seat, as reported by Yafah Sutton for Bensonhurst Bean.

The current 46th Assembly District, which covers Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Gravesend, Seagate, Coney Island, and Brighton Beach, is the result of an ethnically-inspired redistricting plan Regina-Potter had adamantly opposed last year.

The action eventually led to the creation of a 51% Asian-majority district out of parts of Sunset Park and Bensonhurst.

In addition to challenging what she referred to as an “arbitrary, capricious, and politically motivated” reapportionment of the 49th Assembly District by LATFOR, she had also charged that political operatives were trying to unseat her as the GOP’s district leader for Bensonhurst.

After Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo vowed to veto the initial redistricting plan – a position he later reneged on, Regina-Potter appealed to him in a letter which included the accusation that redistricting was merely an attempt to stifle Republican influence in the 49th district.

But wait, it gets better. Continue reading »

Mark Murphy

A recent press release put out by the campaign of U.S. Congressional hopeful Mark Murphy highlighted the high percentage of smaller individual donors who have contributed to his campaign to replace 13th District incumbent Michael Grimm.

From the Murphy campaign’s statement:

…over 70% of Murphyʼs second-quarter contributions were under $250, and 77% of his contributions in the latest filing were from individual donors, as opposed to PACs or similar organizations. Murphy raised $216,427 in the second quarter and now has over $260,000 cash on hand… Continue reading »
