This photo was obviously taken earlier in the year when all of the leaves were still green. I had forgotten that I had this – I didn’t really get the pictures I was looking for that day. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get a picture of a shy squirrel that had run up a tree in Shore Road Park when I finally decided to chase after an easier target.

Weather: The first look at this week’s forecast is looking good. Break out the short sleeves! High temperatures in the 60s today and tomorrow. Chance of rain on Wednesday, and then it cools off again that night, back down to the freezing mark.

Alternate-side parking rules are in effect all week through Friday, but are suspended on Saturday, December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception).

The Shore Road Parks Conservancy has announced two Christmas tree lightings approaching in the next seven days.

The first is tomorrow night (Wednesday, November 28) at the gazebo by 90th Street and Shore Road. Joining the celebration will be the Xaverian High School glee club and band, the Guild For Exceptional Children chorus, and community musician Mary Carmosino. The lighting is at 7:30pm, and light refreshments will be on hand. The rain date is November 29.

If you can’t make it tomorrow – or your Christmas spirit knows no bounds – then make your way up to Owl’s Head Park on Monday, December 3, where the Conservancy will be lighting the tree by 68th Street and Colonial Road. The GEC chorus will make an appearance at this tree lighting as well. The event runs from 7:30pm-9:30pm. The rain date is December 4.

Santa Claus is expected to attend both events.

Just so we’re clear, this is an “after” picture, right? I mean, I wouldn’t exactly say that all of the Parks Department’s pathways were in tip-top shape before Hurricane Sandy came through New York, but I don’t remember it being this bad. I don’t exactly remember… I just wanted to be sure.

This past weekend was a bit of a special one for me: my dad came here to visit me.

He’s been to New York only twice before, and he didn’t even get out of the car the first time, so I don’t think that really counts. He isn’t the type to clamor to see the touristy places in Manhattan he hears about on television, so I took him to my Brooklyn.

My Brooklyn included a trip to Longbow – dinner, a couple of pints, and a growler refilled with London Pride.

My dad once wrote a book on shooting pool, so I took him to Status Q, even though I’ve only shot pool once in the past eight years. I went 0-for-3 against him, though not as horribly as you might think – I don’t play, but I still remember what my dad taught me.

I took him to Papacitos in Greenpoint, once the site of a particularly nice Cinco de Mayo celebration of Mexican food & drink excess for me, topped off with an ice cream cone and a walk to the new Transmitter Park.

I took him to the Greek Cultural Festival at Holy Cross for a gyro and a Marathon beer, and took a walk around the neighborhood afterwards. (You there, with the 1951 Triumph motorcycle – you made my dad’s day.)

And I took him to Coney Island to pick up my son, where all three of the Hedden boys could take a stroll down the Boardwalk and Steeplechase Pier.

Here he is enjoying the view of the harbor towards the end of the weekend.

I tease Staten Island. A lot. Say it sucks. Call its residents jerkfaces. Claim it isn’t worth $13 to go there. The truth is, I really do like the place, and I only tease it out of love, like a kid brother or a girlfriend I’m only kinda into. When I say bad things about it, I only mean some of it.

A few weeks ago, I took the bus over to Fort Wadsworth on the eastern tip of Staten Island. While there, I learned these things. One, taking the bus to Staten Island is really an awful thing. You wait forever for those things to come. Much better to take the subway to the ferry, or maybe hitchhike with strangers with candy.

Two, Fort Wadsworth has goats. I’d be more impressed if they had heavy artillery or land-to-sea missiles, but I can see how doers-of-evil in our city’s harbor would be deterred by goats.

Three, the Shore Road Park looks pretty cool from the other side of the Narrows.

The above image, by Bath Beach photographer David Tan, shows a classic Volkswagen Beetle from the brand that, in the span of a decade, went from being associated with Hitler to becoming a symbol of 1960s counterculture. During the 1980s, a popular movie about time travel led an entire generation to associate the “VW” with terrorism. At least until they went to college.

The photo was taken at the 68th Precinct’s National Night Out in Shore Road Park on August 7, 2012.
